Abigail Chartwell is a widow and likes it that way, thank you very much. She has a fulfilling job as a librarian, a great cat to come home to, and isn’t interested in any of the offers of masculine attention that come her way in response to her youthful good looks and lovely auburn hair. Everything changes on the night she works late at the library, when a cat burglar swings down through a skylight and into her life. He isn’t looking for valuables or things he can sell – this time – but instead is searching for a map that will lead him to a lost painting that holds the key to his beloved grandmother’s family history. Tony wears his spandex pants well and convinces Abigail not to give him away to the police, luring her into the search for this famous missing painting, and endangering her heart as well as her conscience. As the mystery pulls her in, Tony steals over her defenses, opening up her heart to the risks and joys of love that she had promised herself she had forever left behind.Mrs. Chartwell and the Cat Burglar is a sweet, fun romantic mystery that made me very happy while I was reading it. Abigail and Tony investigate and banter and talk through both (all?) of their relationship issues as they work together to find the missing painting. Both of them examine who they are and who they want to be, together and apart, as they fall in love. I enjoyed the quiet aspects of this story as well as the fun investigation and mystery. It’s a cozy, uplifting read for anyone looking for good story to curl up with. Optional accessories: a cup of something warm and a cat in their lap.

Meet Abigail, a beautiful woman, or should I say widow, of just 30 years old. Yes, although marrying at 24, sadly her husband died within a few months. Abigail blames herself for his death and at this time in her life love is not "even on her radar". Working in a library, in the Ancient Maps and Documents Department, Abigail keeps her beauty hidden by putting her hair in a bun and glasses over her eyes. Little does she realize that life is about to drastically change when on one particular evening, upon returning to her desk after closing due to forgetting her gloves, she comes face to face with Tony, a man in black.
Tony Russo, 32, is a thief who can quote Shakespeare! He tells Abigail that he is related to the famous artist, Antonio Russo. Tony needs/wants to borrow a map from the library. Why? (Maps are not allowed to be loaned out.) Tony believes that this one particular map will lead him to an old Russo painting hidden in the city. (Abigail has always believed the lost painting story to be a legend.) Apparently Tony is the descendant of an affair his great great grandmother had with Antonio. The missing painting is a picture of her and he wants to get it for his grandmother before she dies.
The above is an intro to a rather intriguing mystery and romance. Finding the hidden painting is not as simple as looking at the map. There are clues to be solved and danger abounds. Abigail holds a secret in her past and "drop-dead gorgeous" Tony has made a promise to himself that he would never trust a woman again. All that changes when he meets Abigail! As for Abigail, she finds herself caught up in not only solving the mystery but becoming part of Tony's criminal side. Why does she cover and lie for him? How will it all end?
If you are looking for realistic fiction, this is NOT for you. The story-line is way too far-fetched in places. Christianity does play a part in this book but is on the lighter side. I love the fact that there is NO bad language and NO sex scenes in this book - VERY clean. Yes, there is some kissing but that's as far as it goes. Characters do change and the love of Jesus, along with forgiveness, is shown. It is an easy read and one that will keep you wanting to find out how it ends. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. That has not influenced my review. Thanks, Liz
I enjoyed the book and liked both main characters. It was well written and held my interest throughout. However, I’m not sure I like or agree with the overall message I felt the book portrayed. I don’t want to give away too much and spoil the book for others, so I’ll leave it at that. I liked the overall lighthearted touch to both the romance and the mystery.
