Any Man of Mine Chinooks Hockey Team Rachel Gibson Books

I love Rachel Gibson's books. This one, which offers serious lessons about forgiving, forgetting and taking responsibility, is a personal favorite. Event planner Autumn Haven loved, married and lost pro hockey player Sam LeClaire during the one and only wild Vegas vacation she's ever taken. She came home with some souvenirs though - a marriage, a stuffed hound dog, a divorce, a more cautious approach to relationships, and a sweet, wonderful 5 year old son named Conner who loves his father (and she wants him to, right?) and a burning hatred for the man who demanded, via attorney, a paternity test after abandoning her in a Vegas hotel room. Now Autumn's given up the hatred (takes too much energy) and she just wants Sam to spend more time with his child. Sam wants that too but being around a not-hostile Autumn has him hot and bothered all over again. Will. A

Rachel Gibson is my favorite contemporary adult authors and I have all of her books. My favorite book of hers is Truly, Madly Yours.

The story starts with Faith and Ty's wedding which is being organized by Autumn Haven. Haven and Sam had a wild fling in Vegas more than 5 years ago during an emotional time in both their lives. They got carried away and got married within a couple of days. the day after the wedding Autumn wakes up to find Sam gone. The next time she hears from him is through his lawyer asking for a divorce. She discovers she is pregnant and he demands a paternity test. Sam meets his son Conner about a week after his birth. During the first couple years of Conner's life, Sam and Autumn's relationship is toxic. They hate each other and don't get along at all. When a really bad argument is witnessed by their son they agree to not see each other anymore. Sam has his assistants pick up and drop off Conner the couple times he has him. After another bad argument Sam decides he needs to be a better dad and starts spending more time with Conner and therefore spends more time with Autumn. Autumn thinks that this is a phase and he will go back to his old ways but he sticks to it. After spending more time he starts thinking about more ways he can spend time with Autumn. He soon starts popping in more into Autumn's life, inviting them to hockey games, popping in on Halloween and inviting himself for Thanksgiving. He remembers what it was about Autumn that made him crazy about her all those years ago and he starts falling for her and wanting to be a real family. After popping in on them on their vacation they end up sleeping together again. But Autumn believes he will hurt her again and every time he gets close she pushes him away. Sam soon realizes that she may never forgive him for what happened in Vegas and he starts to withdraw too. After a conversation with her brother Vince she realizes she needs to forgive Sam for hurting in order to move on and have a real relationship with his.
I really enjoyed this book. I'm a sucker for re-kindled love stories and this story was no exception. After briefly reading about Sam LeClaire from most of her other hockey books it was nice to finally get to hear his story. Even though some readers might not have liked Autumn's character I did. Yeah she was bitter but she had a really good reason. I liked the fact that Sam knew about his son even if he wasn't really present in his life. I don't really like books where there is a secret child. It is always nice to hear updates about the rest of the couples from past hockey books like Ty and Faith, Mark and Chelsea and even Jules and Bo. The only downside was that this story reminded me to much of Rachel's first novel Simply Irresistible. In both books the main characters have a fling which results in a child. I kept confusing both plots and when I finished reading Any Man of Man I thought "what happened to the scene where she plans the party for the owner of the Chinooks, Mr. Duffy?" Then I remembered he's dead and I was thinking about the wrong book.

A memorable character for me was Autumn's brother Vince. I love how he is so protective of his sister and automatically hated Sam. But towards he end of the book he realizes that Sam really does love his sister and he has a talk with her about forgiveness. Then he leaves to do some mysterious thing and we don't hear more from him until the epilogue. Know I want to know what it is he left to do and I have to wonder if he will be the one of the main characters from Rachel's new book Rescue Me which comes out May 29, 2012.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars!
Autumn Haven married hockey player Sam LeClaire in a Las Vegas wedding chapel six years ago. Their marriage may have been over before it started, but it did last long enough for Autumn to get pregnant with their son, Connor. For the past five years Autumn has been raising Connor alone, with little more than financial support from Sam. Meanwhile Sam has been enjoying the lifestyle of a rich, single sports star - super models, parties and expensive toys. Sam finally decides that he wants to be more involved in Connor's life, and Autumn finds herself being unwillingly charmed by the same man she swore she'd never be able to forgive.

I didn't care for either Sam or Autumn when the story started. Autumn was prickly and argumentative and seemingly hell-bent on finding fault with everything Sam did. However, as we learn their "back story", I could totally see where Autumn was coming from. Sam had hurt her horribly with his actions towards her and Connor and her antipathy towards him was completely understandable.

Sam is what I've come to call Rachel Gibson's typical hockey hero Arrogant, conceited, gorgeous and completely self-absorbed. To be fair, the author gave him the insurmountable task of redeeming himself after he had treated Autumn abominably and pretty much ignored his own son for the first five years of the boy's life. Ouch. I don't know if there's any way he could have redeemed himself, but honestly he didn't have to put a whole lot of effort into it - one peek at Sam's stunning six pack abs and Autumn seemed willing to forgive just about anything! Sam had the self awareness of a rock. He didn't seem to know why he fell for Autumn in the first place, why he left her in such a cowardly fashion or why he couldn't be bothered to be much of a father to his son. In the end I was left with the feeling that he really didn't know why he wanted to get back together with her.

I did like the pacing of the story, with the couple's Vegas interlude told in flashback and the dialog was nicely done. Connor was a believable five year old; no precocious adult-like wisdom or annoying baby-talk. I enjoyed the humor and yes, Sam was a tool, but he was a charming and sexy one and the love scenes are pleasantly steamy. I'm not sure what to make of Vince, Autumn's brother. I've never noticed sequel bait in one of Rachel Gibson's books, but I have to assume that Vince gets his own story in another book because otherwise his character was pretty pointless.

And don't get me started on Chelsea's breast reduction surgery! Didn't we learn all we needed to know about that in Nothing But Trouble ?

So in the end I find myself in an awkward spot when it comes to this story. I did enjoy it - it was a fast read and very entertaining, but honestly I never could see where Sam redeemed himself in Autumn's eyes and I certainly didn't buy into the happily-ever-after.
