Yowza! I'd never ready anything by this author before, but after picking this up when it was on sale this I am definitely checking out more of her work! Tired of the glut of stories featuring insipid female submissives (my apologies to female submissives and the reader who love them, but there's only so much time I can spend in their headspace), I've been on the prowl for heroines with a little more bite. And this book definitely delivers.Michelle and Wyatt have both recently gotten back from their service in Afghanistan, where they had a strong mutual attraction but never acted upon it. Both of them are now battling their own personal demons: Michelle is still mourning the loss of her fiance, and Wyatt is suffering from PTSD after being severely wounded. When Wyatt calls Michelle from jail asking for help, she agrees--but only if he'll agree to be her submissive for the next month.
The sex is seriously hot, although the kink factor is moderate--this is more about the characters' intense attraction for each other than whips and chains. But just as, if not more, important than the BDSM is PTSD. Mayburn explores Wyatt's panic attacks and his attempts to overcome them with as much detail as she does the bedroom scenes, and the result is a level of emotional intensity that is just shy of scorching. I zoomed through the book in a couple of sessions and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an emotionally complex erotic romance.

Be still my beating heart and raging libido. This is my favourite book by Ms. Mayburn. BUY THIS BOOK NOW! I am moved to tears. This book completely shows how a writer beautifully incorporates real life into a romance novel. Make no mistakes, the realities of PTSD are not pretty, yet with love and support, this too shall be conquered.
While this story is fiction, Ms. Mayburn brings realism into it by showing the effects of PTSD on both the soldier and their loved ones. It makes this civilian understand better what happens during an episode. It also makes this civilian respect and appreciate our Armed Forces that much more.
The characters in this book are complex between their past experiences and where they want to be. Michelle is no longer in the Navy, yet she still is a doctor. She's still saving lives just as she saved Wyatt's life when they served together in the sandbox. She returns to him to save him yet again, this time from himself. But is it really him she's saving? Or are they saving each other? I'll let each reader decide for themselves.
The emotion radiating off these pages is potent. I felt fear, sorrow, anguish, frustration, rage and bliss. These intense feelings draw me into a world where a loving Domme trains a new male submissive. This male is so new to the BDSM lifestyle, he only knows the myths portrayed in bad BDSM pornos. The D/s in this story is subtle with a hint of steel. The kinky sex scenes are blazing hawt kicked up a notch. I'm thinking Ms. Mayburn needs to let her kink flag fly high a bit more often. Her depraved mind comes up with a delicious device that I've never seen. I need to send this book to a friend who knows about sexual furniture making.
The erotic power exchange in here is beautiful to witness. It's not an easy and smooth ride. Similar to non-kinky relationships, this one experiences ups and downs. It's fabulous to see a realistic portrayal of a new BDSM couple finding their way to trust one another. It's heartening to watch mistakes not destroy a relationship, only help grow and make it stronger. This book is highly recommended to femdom lovers who want to see the alpha male submit willingly. I am waiting on edge to read the next in this series.

Wyatt PTSD, drinking, suicidal, nothing to look forward to...
Michelle getting over the death of her fiancé - who she feels that she was responsible for his death.
Fair warning...
*this is a FemDom novel (the women is the Dom)
*there contains a large amount of BDSM related activities throughout the story
*it's a fairly heavy and emotional story (it's not a difficult read though)
*although it ends nicely there is a very clear part 2 to the story called Penance (about Wyatt and Michelle)... who's story's first chapter is included with this one & reading the first chapter of Penance just whetted my appetite for more (if I would have known there was a part 2, I still would have bought the book now... Just waited to read it until Penance was closer to releasing).
*Michelle makes a few mistakes with Wyatt (if she didn't there'd be no story), but overall she's a greatly Domme/ Mistress/ Domina! More authors need to write Dommes like Ms. Mayburn did.
*To those who are sensitive about Veterans issues (PTSD, coming back from War, suicide), these subjects do come up within this story line and are dealt with very well and graciously.
Side note to ALL OF THE AUTHORS guess what... not all of us are subs in our hearts... Some of us are switches and some of us are Dommes. In other words WRITE MORE FEMDOM STORIES and more SWITCH stories (just please please please none of that b*ll about being a Domme/Switch and then getting in a monogamous relationship where she's a sub to 'just the right Uber-Dom... that's just a pile of baloney) !!!
